Abstract

Dementia is a condition where a person experiences a decline or cognitive impairment. Patients with dementia require special attention in nursing practice. One therapy to reduce dementia symptoms that nurses can do is cognitive stimulation therapy, where this benefit can help slow the progression of dementia symptoms. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation therapy in patients with this condition, with a focus on nursing care. This study uses a descriptive approach to describe the study process from assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through direct observation, physical examination, and documentation study on May 15-17, 2024, at Katsuren Itoman Hospital, Japan, with one respondent. The results showed a significant increase in dementia symptom scores after being given cognitive stimulation therapy. The average MMSE score increased from 18.5 before the intervention to 23.2 after the intervention. Cognitive stimulation therapy is effective in reducing dementia symptoms in the elderly and can be used as a non-pharmacological intervention at Katsuren Hospital.
