Disaster Preparedness: An Analysis of Nurses as the Frontline in Type C General Hospital

Indonesia is known as a region with a high risk of natural disasters. In such emergency situations, nurses often serve as the frontline responders. However, several studies have revealed that there are still deficiencies in their preparedness for such events. This study aims to evaluate the level of disaster preparedness among nurses in Type C regional general hospital, particularly in terms of knowledge and skills, as well as the influencing factors. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, involving 43 nurses as respondents. The research instrument was a questionnaire developed based on the Disaster Preparedness Evaluation Tool (DPET). The level of nurse preparedness was categorized as moderate, with an average score of 3.27 (SD = 0.49). In terms of knowledge, nurses scored an average of 3.49 (SD = 0.53), while skill scores averaged 3.21 (SD = 0.53). Nurses working in the emergency department (ED) demonstrated the highest level of preparedness. No significant relationship was found between preparedness and gender, age, or education level. However, nurses with more than five years of work experience tended to have better preparedness (p = 0.028). The findings indicate the need to enhance nurses' skills in disaster response through continuous training and simulation. In addition, periodic rotation across work units may serve as an additional strategy to enrich experience and improve nurses’ readiness in emergency situations.
