Analysis of Intelligence Capabilities Among Sepak Takraw Athletes

Abstract

Sepak Takraw demands exceptional physical prowess and acrobatic agility; however, the cognitive mechanisms enabling high-speed tactical execution are frequently overlooked in regional training paradigms. This study aims to systematically evaluate the intelligence capabilities of competitive Sepak Takraw athletes in Demak Regency to establish a foundational cognitive profile for future talent identification and coaching optimization. Employing a quantitative descriptive research design, the study utilized a purposive sampling technique to select 60 active athletes, aged 15 to 25 years, who have previously competed at the regional level. Data were collected using the Culture Fair Intelligence Test (CFIT), a standardized instrument chosen to measure fluid intelligence and spatial reasoning independently of educational backgrounds. The descriptive statistical analysis revealed a mean intelligence quotient (IQ) score of 104.5, alongside a standard deviation of 8.2. Categorically, 65% of the athletes were classified within the average to high-average intelligence bracket (IQ 90-114), 15% demonstrated superior intelligence (IQ > 115), and 20% fell into the below-average category (IQ < 90). Furthermore, participants scored highest on spatial pattern recognition, averaging in the 65th percentile. The findings indicate that while baseline cognitive capabilities are fundamentally average, significant variance exists. The study concludes that current coaching methodologies must evolve beyond purely physical metrics to incorporate formal cognitive assessments, thereby fostering better tactical anticipation and adaptability.
