Abstract

Not only do burns cause damage physically but also they have significant impacts in psychological, social and spiritual changes of the sufferers. The burnt wounds after effect on the appearance can cause various challenges; including emotional disturbance, low self-esteem, and limited social interactions. The study aims to understand patients' burnt wound experiences, especially in the face-change appearance, as well as how they adapt with the mentioned condition. The study applied was incorporating the qualitative and phenomenological approaches. The data collection was then collected through deep interview sessions with seven respondents who have experienced the change in their appearance due to burnt wounds. After then, the data analysis was acquired through the Colaizzi method in order to identify the actual themes. Six themes established from the study: coping mechanism adaptation, acceptance and adaptation, acquiring social support, sources of assistance, lessons learnt, limited motor function and psychiatric illnesses. Changes in appearance consequence of burnt wounds impacted on various aspects to patients' aspects of life. Effective coping strategies and adequate social support contributes to patients' ability to adapt with their condition.
